This weekend I will be attending the Sunset Songwriting Festival at the Sunset Station Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The weekend is billed as “A jam-packed weekend of Hit Songwriter Shows, Pro Workshops, and Industry “Get Connected” Events”, and if you would like to attend you can still sign up here.

I learned about the event in August when I attended a function with Clay Mills and Rick Barker. As you recall, Clay Mills is a songwriter whose best known hits include Darius Rucker’s “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It” and Diamond Rio’s “Beautiful Mess.” Rick Barker is the founder of Music Industry Blueprint, a 25 year music industry veteran, and probably best known as the manager who helped launch the career of Taylor Swift. Both Mills and Barker will be speaking at the festival along with several other industry veterans, including:

Jonathan Watkins, Music Supervisor/Film & TV

Marty Dodson, Ole Music Publishing

-Frankie Pine, Music Supervisor and President of Whirly Girl Music

Shelly Peiken, multi-platinum Grammy nominated songwriter, blogger for the Huffington Post. Shelly’s best known songs include “What a Girl Wants”, a #1 hit for Christina Aguilera, and the Meredith Brooks hit “Bitch”.

Suzan Koc, Music Publisher/Educator.

As the weekend will consist mainly of workshops and social events, there will be plenty of opportunities to meet with the speakers and ask questions. With two music supervisors on hand I hope to learn more about placing music in Film and TV shows, a very lucrative and important source of revenue for independent musicians which I discussed in a previous post.

So if any of you have questions you would like me to ask any of the speakers on your behalf, feel free to pass your questions along! You can leave a message in the comments below or find me on twitter @LawyerRussell.

I’ll be providing updates throughout the weekend and a recap once the weekend is done. I hope to see some of you there!

-Russell
